Appaloosa HorsesThe Appaloosa is a horse breed known for its physical capabilities and leopard-spotted coat pattern .This nice American breed was developed by Nez Perce people of the American Pacific Northwest They were once referred to by white settlers as the "Palouse horse", possibly after the Palouse River, which ran through the heart of Nez Perce country. Gradually, the name evolved into "Appaloosa". Probably the Appaloosa's most distinguishing feature for its spotted coat and can be found in various patterns. The more common patterns are a dark body color with light spots and a white body with dark spots. Appaloosas are known for their quiet temperament. They are known for its versatility, and are able jumpers. They are good trail and long distance riders.
The ApHC recognizes the following base colors: bay, black, dun, Bay roan, blue roan, Red roan, palomino, Cremello, Perlino and Grulla. Each should also display one of the Appaloosa patterns on top of the base color.
