American Standard Bred Horses

This breed was developed in North America in1788, and is now recognized worldwide for its harness racing ability. This breed of horse received its name because during the early years of registration, only horses that could trot or pace in the standard time were awarded registration in the Stud Book. They are usually used in racing and most of this breed can completes a mile race in 3 minutes. The Standardbred has a longer body and shorter legs than Thoroughbreds. They also have a calmer disposition than other breeds of race horses because trotting and pacing requires a great deal of strategy.

It is because of their speed, Standardbreds are often used to upgrade other breeds of harness racers around the world, such as the French Trotter and Orlov Trotter. This breed is quite good at jumping, show jumping, show hunter and eventing. The breed can also be seen in dressage. Their excellent temperaments make them good trail riding and ranch horses. The Standardbred of today is the fastest harness racing horse in the world.  In addition, because of the genetics of the breed, they can also be encouraged and trained to perform smooth ambling gaits, such as the rack and the stepping pace.

Most of the Standardbreds that are racing today can have their lineage traced back to just a few foundation sires. Two of these sires include Messenger and Hamiltonian. Horse racing fans that are interested in watching harness racing can enjoy the sport at many of the racetracks during the summer months. There are even some racetracks that are dedicated to only hosting meets for Standardbred trotters and pacers.
